Macklin’s Kitchen serves a wide variety of local Plate Lunches with a unique flair: Teri Chicken, Roast Pork, Fried Noodle and much more. Some Entrees change daily. Our Plate Lunches are for take-out only and we call it Take Out Plate Lunch, we call it Take Out Mixed Plate if there is two or more than two entrée, we call it Box Lunch if placed in a box. Plate Lunch is unique to Hawaii and is a traditional island meal and is available day and night although the name is "Plate Lunch" which everyone would think it's only served during lunch. No matter what time of the day you’re craving local favorites, you can have it taken out at MACKLIN'S KITCHEN and eat with your ohana with great satisfaction.
The History of Hawaiian Plate Lunch
The Hawaiian plate lunch goes back to the 1880s during the early days of the sugar plantations. Laborers were brought to Hawaii from around the world, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Korean, and Filipinos, to work in the sugarcane fields. The workers didn’t eat sandwiches. During their lunch break, the Japanese laborers would bring teriyaki beef with rice and pickled vegetables. The Filipino workers bring their traditional adobo or pinakbet or perhaps a pork or chicken stew. The Koreans had their kalbi or marinated ribs and the Chinese a rice noodle and vegetable dish called chow fun. The Hawaiians bring their kalua pig, roasted in an underground oven called an imu. At some point macaroni salad was added to the plates, not only because it was a good bridge for national taste, but also it mixed well with most of the meats used in the plate lunches. It wasn’t long before they began to share their foods with one another and the “mixed plate” was born.
As the plantations came to an end, plate lunches began being served on-site by lunch wagons to construction workers and day laborers. Eventually it started showing up in local hole in the wall restaurants before the first “plate lunch” restaurants began popping up. Before long there were even a few plate lunch franchises and they made the jump to the US, where the craze spread into California.
What’s in a Hawaiian Plate Lunch?
Hawaiian Plate Lunch contains 2 scoops of white rice, macaroni salad and an entrée. If a plate lunch has more than one entrée then it is called a “mixed plate”. Today the mixed plate lunch is a popular choice in Hawaii and has become a staple of locals and tourists crave for it. It’s normally packed into a compartmental foam container so it’s easy to transport on the go. Disposable chopsticks or plastic forks are the choice utensil. Entrées to choose from: kalua pig, chicken katsu (fried boneless chicken breaded in Panko bread crumbs) "loco moco" ( hamburger steak smothered in brown gravy and topped with a choice sunny side egg or over easy egg), teri beef, Hawaii-Style barbecue chicken, laulau, or fried mahi mahi, just to mention a few. Normally, “two scoops rice” and “one scoop of Hawaiian macaroni salad”, (better known as “mac salad”), always accompany the traditional plate lunch. Combine any for a reasonable price you can count on having a lot of food. Island wide, from mom and pop shops, to lunch wagons, to local chains, you won’t have to look far to find the perfect plate lunch, just walk-in and take-out plate lunches at Macklin’s Kitchen.

Here you will find a wide variety of plate lunches with your choices in our regular menu mostly local foods such as Teri Chicken, Fried Chicken, Pork Belly 'Tinono', Roast Pork and a variety of dishes that changes everyday mostly sourced from our local farmers market. To order just go straight to the buffet counter and tell if you want the Box Lunch or 1 choice or 2 choices or 3 choices of our entrée then choose your starch for the choices you made - whether you like all rice or all noodles or we call it 'half-half' if you want one scoop of rice and noodle, then choose your entrée and it comes with a scoop of macaroni salad.
